Duties Description The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) is recruiting to fill an Advocacy Specialist 2 position within the Office of Advocacy and Peer Support Services (OAPSS) located at the Central Office in Albany. OAPSS works to ensure the inclusion of recipients across the lifespan (youth, transition age youth, adults, and older adults) and their families perspectives into OMH policy making and program planning, development, and evaluation. Specifically, the incumbent will work to support the successful growth and professional development of Peer Specialists within the organization through mentorship, technical assistance, training and support to agency programs utilizing peer specialist staff as part of the treatment team. The incumbent serves at a statewide level and functions as a Peer Coordinator interacting and collaborating with the OAPSS, Central Office, the Long Island, Hudson River, Central New York, and Western New York Region Field Offices and state-operated Psychiatric Centers to deliver oversight, technical assistance, support, and education and training.
 
 Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
 
 -Work with Psychiatric Centers, Central office and Field Office staff to continue to incorporate peer values and the recognition of the Peer Specialist Discipline into OMH State Operated Programs.
 
 -Promote awareness and fidelity of peer support values within peer services and disciplines.
 
 -Provide support and technical assistance to Peer Specialists working within Psychiatric Center programs, including inpatient, outpatient, and residential around peer values, peer best practices, advocacy practices, and other modalities utilized by certified Peer Specialists statewide and nation-wide.
 
 -Provide feedback and recommendations to supervisors concerning the fidelity practices of peer support, peer specialist core values, New York Peer Specialists Code of Ethical Conduct, and support the professional development of the peer specialist discipline.
 
 -Assist the OAPSS with facilitation of the overall shift in perspective needed agency wide in the role and value of Peer Specialist in accordance with the promoted peer values and best practices supported by the New York Peer Specialist Certification Board (NYPSCB).
 
 -Participate in OMH workgroups composed of Peer Specialists, clinical and supervisory staff, OAPSS, and related stakeholders in statewide and regional initiatives to ensure that Peer Specialists engage in peer-related work in accordance with best practices and peer values.
 
 -Provide a regional perspective, as well as technical assistance, in support of the networking, training and professional development of Peer Specialists.
 
 -Provide expert guidance, support, education, and training on co-supervision of Peer Specialists following accepted practices on co-supervision from peer models.
 
 -Convene regional focus groups, work groups, and dialogues to gather feedback and direction from Peer Specialists on development, support, and growth of the profession.
 
 -Provide expert guidance, support, education, and training to ensure Peer Specialist services are trauma-informed/responsive, recovery-oriented, and culturally relevant.
 
 -Promote awareness of recovery, self-help, and empowerment, and the role of Peer Specialists within this framework to Peer Specialists and agency wide staff.
 
 -Assist in the recruitment and retention of Peer Specialists within the Psychiatric Centers' programs in fulfillment of the direction provided by OAPSS Deputy Director and Chief Advocacy Officer, and the Commissioner.
 
 Minimum Qualifications Qualified candidates must possess:
 
 A Bachelor's degree AND two years experience as a professional advocate or service provider in the field of rehabilitation, developmental disabilities, or mental health.
 
 OR
 
 A Bachelor's and Master's degree in a human services field AND one year of experience as a professional advocate or service provider in the field of rehabilitation, developmental disabilities, or mental health.
 
 OR
 
 Six years of experience as a professional advocate or service provider in the field of rehabilitation, developmental disabilities, or mental health.
